Kim applied for, and received non-profit status for Wildhorse Ranch Rescue (WRR) and with the help of many people, WRR has been able to help save many horses from death, abuse and neglect. But even with their efforts, they could not save very many horses. They rescued horses privately from 1995 until 2000. Once they knew that over 60,000 horses in this country are sent to horrible deaths each year, they knew they had to do something to help. She and her two young children, Nick and McKay, accidentally found out about the plight of homeless horses in the United States. Wildhorse Ranch Rescue was started in 1995 by Kim Meagher (pronounced Ma-her), an employee of Intel Corporation. To save animals from abuse, neglect, slaughter and premature death and provide a safe place for them to live for the remainder of their lives. Remember, call in advance, and consider making a donation. The personal tour lasted about an hour and we were so appreciative and so glad we went there. Jack filled us with a great deal of information about the program and convinced me that this sanctuary will use all of its donations to care for their birds. The birds are beautiful, funny, and sometimes sociable. Jack led us around the 50-plus "rehab facilities" and saw 100s of birds, as well as those in the hospital room needing more attention. The amount of work (which is all volunteer!) to do this is tremendous but the rewards are great. Wild at Heart rescues owls, raptors, falcons, and other birds of prey and rehabilitates them until the birds are ready to be released back to the wild.
